David Glanz respected military historian has written a paper on this campaign. The documentary gives a clear picture of USSR's capabilities at this stage of the war. Below a link to a broaching of the reasons for Japan's surrender: www.japanfocus.org/-Tsuyoshi-Hasegawa/2501hope of interest.

Covers more ground than the previous video. You will be rewarded by a smile from Stalin and a beam of light from Molotov. Small wonder--they had pulled off a Diplomatic Triumph. A Neutrality Pact with Japan. It held. USSR was the only state not to be fighting on TWO fronts, during the course of the war. Evidently the news that Stalin and Molotov were complete cretins, had not reached Moscow. As people know it was to have profound implication for strategic planning. Not least the timely defence of Moscow. So the tender glances between two world class leaders were not at all out of place. Others would have blanched for it heralded the dismemberment of Empire, colonial outposts in far east.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet%E2%80%93Japanese_Neutrality_Pact

Path-breaking study of a little-known but crucial campaign, 16 July 2012
This Will Podmore review is from: The Soviet Strategic Offensive in Manchuria, 1945: 'August Storm' (Cass Series on Soviet (Russian) Military Experience) (Paperback)
The US Chiefs of Staff said that the Soviet commitment to declare war on Japan would save 200,000 American lives.
In August 1945, the Red Army shattered Japan's Kwantung Army in 7 days and achieved total victory in the Far East in less than 3 weeks. They killed or wounded 674,000 Japanese troops, losing 12,031 killed and 24,425 wounded.
As Glantz concluded, "The massive scale of the Soviet attack was matched by the audaciousness, skill, and relentlessness with which it was conducted."
After this defeat, the Japanese government knew they had no hope of continuing the war from their imperial holdings on the mainland of Asia. So this great Red Army victory played a key part in forcing the Japanese government to surrender.
